Exposure Checks: River,1993/2010, enlarged black and white polaroid, 18" x 24", edition of 5
"During the shooting of the uncompleted film "Dark Blood," Ed Lachman, the film's cinematographer, took a number of black-and-white Polaroid photographs as exposure checks, including this image of River Pheonix acting in the deathbed scene that was to have occurred at the end of the film. All of the Polaroids except for this one were lost. This surviving image has become, in retrospect, an uncanny echo of Pheonix's own death, and a photographic trace of a scene that was filmed but never completed." - Chrissie Iles
